Why aspirED? What are we Building?
At aspirED, our goal is to eliminate the confusion and frustration many families experience when arriving in a new country. We are creating a seamless, user-friendly experience that empowers parents and students with the knowledge and connections they need to thrive.
Education should never be a barrier—it should be a pathway to opportunity. aspirED is built on the belief that when families feel informed, supported, and valued, they can confidently build a brighter future, and thrive when they arrive.
We are building a solution to address 2 core barriers that many newcomers face when trying to access the Ontario education system:
Problem #1: Access to Information
Newcomer families are not getting the required tools/information to navigate the Ontario Education system and supports available to successfully integrate into Canadian society.
The Youthrex Evaluation and Exchange report found that over 40% of newcomer families felt they did not receive adequate information on how to enroll their children in school, access special education services, or understand the curriculum. This lack of clear guidance creates obstacles in ensuring newcomer students receive the support they need to succeed.
Our Solution: aspirED offers a comprehensive online platform, providing easy to navigate critical information on the Ontario education system and available community support.
Problem #2: Equitable and inclusive access to holistic support available in Ontario
Newcomers face further barriers by not having equitable access to supports and information on a variety of social services. This includes access to services not available in their first language. A 2023 report from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) found that 44% of recent immigrants who needed settlement services did not access them, with language being one of the main obstacles. Many reported difficulties in finding information in their preferred language, which prevented them from fully benefiting from available programs. (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada IRCC 2023).
Our Solution: aspirED’s support hub will provide easy to navigate general information in a variety of languages to increase equitable access to available supports in Ontario.
